IPv4 - IPv6 Transition

Survey by the eco Competence Group Networks

The Internet has grown much more than originally expected, and for years the required address space has no longer been sufficient. Already in 1998, 25 years ago, IPv6 was published as an official standard with RFC 2460. IPv6 has been on the rise at the protocol level for about 10 years. According to Google, 43% of all users now use IPv6. In Germany the proportion is 66%, in France even 75% (https://www.google.de/ipv6/statistics.html#tab=ipv6-adoption).The still ongoing transition phase is characterised by the fact that many systems can handle both IPv4 and IPv6. This dual path only makes sense for a transitional period; in the long term, it ties up unnecessary resources in the networks - with scarce engineering capacities, in call centres, etc. This means that the time is approaching when IPv6 is to be applied as the rule and IPv4 becomes the exception. eco would like to support its members in the changeover. The survey will be conducted anonymously. The following four questions will help us to determine the status quo. We would like to present the results of the IPv6 survey in detail at a virtual meeting on 3 March 2023.
